Kawaii Chika-san's Incredible Studio!

Oh My Goodness today was so inspiring!

My friend Shimizu-chan and I went to Asakusabashi to visit Higashi Chika-san's amazing shop and gallery Le Lieu but we when we arrived Chika-san asked 'Hello Sandwich-san desu ne?' and she gave us a beautiful tour of her studio!!! It's a four storey converted studio building which she shares with her super cute five-year-old daughter and two other creators. At the very top of the spiral staircase is this amazing space which I am so excited to share with you today! I hope you will enjoy this studio tour!

Chika-san makes these beautiful umbrellas (and parasols) and stunning scarves (below).

Sometimes I find myself in situations like this where I have to pinch myself to believe that I-am-in-an-amazing-studio-in-Tokyo-and-they-are-speaking-to-me-in-Japanese-and-I-want-to-live-here-forever!

The moral to this story is that you really won't want to miss a trip to this gallery and shop if you're in Tokyo! Of course this will be in the new Hello Sandwich Tokyo Guide PDF coming soon!

Tokyo Winter 2012

Tokyo is a really incredible city! I've been indoors a lot lately because it's warm here in my mini-me Shimokitazawa apartment and I work from home. There's been a lot of chai, a lot of coffee, a lot of hot water bottles, constant heating, some trips to Tipness, a spot of 1Q84 reading, sadly no Nihongo study, and some work on my new Tokyo Guide...but when I go out I'm always inspired! Everyday I experience something that brings a smile to my face.

- cute Japanese boys wearing beanies in Tokyo cafe kitchens.
- the girl at Shibuya station, Inokashira sen section wearing black and white polka dot pants.
- cooking nabe.
- getting door-to-door from my apt to Shibuya by train in 15 minutes (ten mins by mamachari!)
- the LoFT Valentines Day section filled with every chocolate / chocolate wrapping / sweets cooking set item you could ever imagine. Also accompanied by the token LoFT Valentines Day song!
- eating mikan.
- the craft + design sections at my favourite Aoyama bookshop.
- being able to watch an english movie (in english) while running 7kms at Tipness.
- being interviewed and photographed for a Japanese newspaper.
- waiting for snow.
- having meetings with Japanese editors and publishers.
- wearing pom pom gloves and riding my mamachari.
- spotting pink and grey stripe trucks.

and wondering around taking instagram photos. I am hellosandwich on instagram if you are so inclined.

Tsutaya Daikanyama T-site

At the moment I'm renewing the Hello Sandwich Tokyo Guide PDF and adding lots of cute places I've found since living in Tokyo. I hope you'll like the PDF guide when it's released within a few months. It's a lot of fun visiting new places to include in the guide. Yesterday we visited the new Tsutaya Daikanyama T-site. Oh my goodness this place is incredible!

Bookshop, Magazine shop, Stationery shop, DVD Shop, DVD and CD rental shop, Lounge Cafe, Starbucks, Family Mart, Cute camera shop, Electronic bike shop...It's such a lovely place to spend an afternoon.

In this section customers can listen to any rental CD before borrowing! Some customers had bought their Starbucks coffees from the cafe downstairs and were relaxing with delightful views at the listening stations.

There is a fancy lounge (coffee is ¥900!) where customers can read books and enjoy a sandwich and a glass of wine. Naturally, on a Sunday this place was packed with a long line up to get a seat. On the plus side, while you wait in line customers can browse the menu on ipads which are given to each customer.

Continuing on the ipad theme, when you're in the DVD rental section you can search for your DVD on many ipads located amongst the shelves. Once you type in your DVD of choice you are taken to a screen which precisely locates the exact location of the DVD. Very convenient. Very Japanese. I made a Tsutaya rental card and got four rental DVDs for ¥1000.The great thing is, if you select to return the DVDs by post you receive a small velcro + zipper postage paid pack to simply pop the DVDs in when you're done. And it's free to return them by post. Amazing!

The outside space, even in winter, is enjoyable. But I can't help but think how lovely it will be to dine at one of the restaurants with outdoor seating sections when the weather warms up.

If you bring your cute little puppy you can tie him/her up at mini puppy stations. Adorable no?

If you're in Tokyo and have a spare afternoon, do pop on into the new Tsutaya Daikanyama T-site for a relaxing afternoon.

Shinjuku Gyoen Picnic

What a lovely day it was today!

A spot of embroidery with my morning coffee. A winter morning run along my local nature walk where I spotted these blossoms starting to bloom. I've been riding my mamachari to the nature walk and running 5 to 7 kms through Sangengaya and along to Kannana Dori and back. I've been tracking my runs on RunKeeper. It's an incredible app if you like running outdoors.

After lunch I rode my mamachari to Commune gallery to see the beautiful accessory exhibition and chat with some super cute new friends. If you have time, be sure to pop in to see the accessories before the exhibition comes down on Wednesday.

I then headed off to Shinjuku where I was invited to a lovely picnic in Shinjuku Gyoen by Yuko-san. The lovely Yuko-san was a participant at two of my workshops and she has the most lovely sense. Yuko-san and her husband wore matching Comme des Garcons cardigans (and matching Tupera Tupera badges!) and prepared beautiful scones and hot chocolate to share in the park. They hand decorated paper cups with mt masking tape and presented everything on a mini table that looked like it could have been taken directly from a cute cafe! We all sat down and going around the circle introduced ourselves and spoke a little about what we love / do. I remember when I first moved to Japan how daunting this Japanese introduction system was!

By 4:30 when the sun went down and the 'we're-closing-the-park-now-so-please-leave-onegaishimasu' song came over the loud speakers we brushed the grass off our clothes and headed back to the station. By this time my feet were frozen numb and I was reaching for my bag to see if I had any hidden kairo packs. I did a sneaky detour via Tokyu Hands and Kinokuniya - some of my favourite past times - and took the Odakyu-sen back to Shimokitazawa. A quick trip to my local supermarket Ozeki to stock up on nabe ingredients, and before you knew it I was relaxing at home with a glass of red wine and some delicious nabe.

A perfect winters day.

Winged Wheel also hosts invitation only industry workshops. At a recent workshop we made some vintage book files using brown envelopes and collage materials. You could try making one yourself from a vintage hardcover book and your favourite envelopes. They are perfect for filing receipts!

I just heard some great news from my Lawyer - I got my new visa for another year in Japan! Yay!

Shibaura House 'Handmade Present' Window Display

Hello!

Here is a sneak peek of the Hello Sandwich window display (sorry - via instagram and iphone camera ) at Shibaura House! The window display is for the 'Handmade Present' exhibition and workshop series which starts at Shibaura House 15th December! I'll be hosting a Christmas Garland making workshop tomorrow (15th December) at 7pm and I hope you can come along.

My craft idol Udagawa-san is coming too! If you have some of her books you could bring them and she might sign them for you if you ask nicely ;)

It was pretty incredible working in Shibuara House today. Did you know that the ground floor is a free space for anyone to use? There is a cafe making incredible organic coffee there too but you can also bring your own bento or sandwich lunch and enjoy the nice jazz and beautiful light and atmosphere. They have blankets too so you can keep warm while you read a book and relax. The owners idea is that it's like a park, a place for gathering and meeting. Incredible no? I said 'incredible' too many times didn't I?

I hope you can pop in and soak up some Shibaura House and enjoy the Hello Sandwich window display and Handmade Present exhibition.

Kusakanmuri is a new shop opened by Japanese publishers BNN. It's a florist, but with an amazing twist. You get to make your own bunch by yourself after picking the beautiful flowers from each bucket yourself! There is a giant timber table and you can enjoy arranging and wrapping your flowers all by yourself. Ofcourse if you would prefer for someone to make the flowers for you, you can! They also have a florist school and a gorgeous zakka shop upstairs! If you're in Ebisu be sure to pop in!

What do you do?
I am an Australian designer, artist, crafter and zine maker living in Tokyo. Before I moved to Tokyo I worked at VOGUE Living magazine for 11 years most recently in the position of Deputy Art Director. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make leaving my job as I loved it dearly, but Tokyo is such an incredible city and I’m so happy living here.

Describe the flat.
Hello Sandwich HQ is a teeny 38square meter apartment on the third and top floor of a small apartment building in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo. It’s South facing which in Tokyo means it’s super sunny. According to the Japanese real estate system it’s 2DK (two rooms plus a dining area and a kitchen area) which is quite standard for a Tokyo apartment. The thing I love most about this apartment is it’s location. It’s only 4 minutes on the train, or a ten minute bike ride to Shibuya where I like to hang out and go shopping.

How long have you been there?
We’ve been living here since I moved to Tokyo in June 2010. I picked the apartment from a Japanese real estate search website while I was living in Sydney. When I arrived it was so much smaller than I thought. I remember thinking it was like a Barbie dolls house (like many things in Tokyo that seem to have been shrunk). My tall guy friends can touch the ceilings and have to duck under doorways!

What’s the neighbourhood like?
Shimokitazawa is a buzzy and creative neighbourhood frequented by students. It’s little side streets are dotted with vintage clothing stores, cute cafes, izakayas, and we have our own Muji here. It’s the kind of neighbouhood where you can get to names basis with the café staff, pick up a handmade present from a zakka shop, stock up on essentials at the supermarket, see a band at night and enjoy a few drinks at a cute six-seater bar. You could get by day to day life without ever leaving this neighbourhood.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Sydney. Before moving to Tokyo I lived in Darlinghurst and afterwards in Annandale.

How is your current location different?
Ooo - everything is so different. I think that’s part of the appeal for me. The streets near my apartment are teeny and windy and when I first moved here it took a few weeks to work out how to get home from the train station. At 5pm every day there is a bell which always brings a smile to my face, the supermarket stocks vegetables I’ve never even heard of, and there is always a new shop or street to discover. When I have free time I walk around or ride my mamachari (grandma style bike) around taking photographs of these details that are so unique to me.

How would you describe your decorating style?
I like to collect retro pieces from the 50’s and 60’s particularly those in coral, mint and lemon yellow colourways. I love collecting quirky pieces like my Goose lamp and I have a soft spot for ditsy florals, table cloths, crochet blankets and polka dot ceramics. Unfortunately when I moved to Tokyo I had to put all of my furniture in storage and I desperately miss my checkerboard pastel coloured tiled coffee table. I’ve always wanted one of the mini ice cream cone lamps that you see outside shops in Japan for my apartment. If you see one for sale can you let me know pretty please?

Where has most of your stuff come from? (secondhand, local markets, handmade?)
When I was living in Sydney almost all of my furniture came from second hand shops but in Japan it’s become a bit of a mix of old and new. In my Shimokitazawa mini-me apartment pieces from Muji and Nitori (Japanese Ikea) are mixed with local retro secondhand furniture shop finds.

What’s important to you in a living space?
First and foremost is light. For me it’s essential to have good natural light.
I would really love to have a little garden, and one day it’s a dream of mine to have a garden studio shed, but in Tokyo it’s impossible for me. At the moment, just living in Tokyo is incredible enough!

What’s your favourite item in the flat and what’s the story behind it?
My little Goose Lamp is my favourite item in my Tokyo apartment. I picked it up from a second hand furniture shop near my house. There is a restaurant right near my house which has the identical (but with a yellow beak) one outside their shop front. I wish mine had a friend…but I’m not one to steal!

What’s your favourite memory that’s taken place in the flat?
This February 17th I woke up to a white winter wonderland outside my window. It was amazing to see snow covering my balcony and all of the rooftops visible from my window. I got dressed as quickly as possible and rushed outside to take photos and listen to my footprints crunching the snow. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

The scariest memory here was March 11 in the giant earthquake where my entire apartment shoot and things were broken everywhere. It was terrifying.

What goes on in the flat – do you work from home at all?
I work from home so after my morning coffee and reading my favourite blogs, my apartment becomes Hello Sandwich HQ. Here I make craft projects, photograph projects for my new book, write trend reports, design, update Hello Sandwich and work on various other design projects.

How about entertaining, are you able to get many friends in? (describe some of the parties/events you’ve been able to have)
Some of the first guest to arrive in my apartment was a team of BNN book editors and a photographer who came to photograph me for their Girls Zine book. It was the morning they were due to arrive and I suddenly realized I didn’t have slippers for each of them to wear in the apartment. I felt very un-Japanese and spent the start of the meeting apologizing to them with a very awkward bowing action.

I’ve since bought about 8 pairs of slippers for a Christmas party I had last year. For our Christmas party I transformed our study desks into a makeshift large dining table by joining them together and covering them with a giant table cloth. I didn’t have enough chairs for the 8 guests who came so some guests ended up sitting on the edge of the bed. Ah – Tokyo life!
It’s my dream to have a nabe party…a popular style party in Japan as the months get cooler where everyone sits under a kotatsu (heated coffee table with blanket attached) and eats nabe.

Since moving to Japan, what have you learnt about the art of living in small spaces from the locals?
The good thing about Japan is, because of the limited space, they have devised so many great storage solutions, boxes and compartments all which are beautifully designed in a quintessentially Japanese style. I’ve had to buy some pretty clever storage solution furniture such as stackable boxes from an online shop. The 100 yen shop has been a great help with sorting all of my craft things.

I imagine storage is an issue – have you come up with clever space savers or just gone minimal in your possessions?
Sadly, neither. I’ve just got pretty good at tetras! I can slot boxes of craft goodies into my cupboard faster than you can imagine.

What is ‘home’ to you?
Home for me is Sydney, where my family and best friends are. It's like the Qantas ad ‘I still call Australia homeeee’.

Commune Gallery Nengajo Making Workshop

I still haven't sent mine :( but we did have a lovely time making some cards together at the Hello Sandwich Nengajo Making workshop at Commune Gallery this week. We did lots of hand stamping and used collage papers, mt tape and markers to decorate our cards.

With the festive season coming up I thought I'd share a tutorial from the Hello Sandwich Gift Wrapping Zine. It's a simple way to turn wrapping paper, kraft paper or even a pre-loved envelope into an original paper gift bag.

HOW TO MAKE

1. Take a sheet of paper or wrapping paper approximately double the size that you desire your bag and fold it in half horizontally.

2. Fold the sides horizontally inwards and slot one side into the other. Tape together with washi tape.

3. Fold the base of your bag in and press down forming a crease.

4. Open out one side of the base by flattening the corners into a triangle shape.

5. Repeat step 4 with the other side of your base.

6. Fold your base inwards as shown in the picture.

7. Repeat step 6 on the other side of the base.

8. Tape together the base using washi tape.

9. Take store bought handles or use the handles off another paper shop bag.

10. Tape your handles to the inside of your gift bag and your bag is ready to go!

You could also get creative with mt tape and decorate your bag like this one I made after a trip to the mt expo!

Hello Sandwich Christmas Garland Workshop

Let's enjoy making a non-traditional style Christmas Garland in pretty feminine colours!
Participants will receive paper ornaments designed by Hello Sandwich (such as a wreath, a Christmas tree and a striped bauble) to include in their original Christmas Garland. Participants can use pom poms, fabric, lace and trims, tinsel and other materials provided to make their garland. Participants will also be shown how to make the Hello Sandwich confetti bow to include on their garland.

There will also be an exhibition on the ground floor during the Present Exhibition and I'll be doing a colourful window display so please pop in and say hello!

Hakone 2011

It's that time of year again in Tokyo where people take the Odakyu sen Romance Car and flock to Hakone to view the autumn leaves. We went yesterday and it was just beautiful! The colours of the leaves are just breathtaking!

This year we took the Hakone Ropeway to Ashinoko.

We could clearly see Fuji-san from the ropeway.

Everyone made an 'oooooooooo!!!' when we spotted Fuji san and the sound of all the cameras clicking was so Japan.

It was so tempting to take a ride on the Swan Boats, but do you know the legend? Some say that if you ride on these boats with your boyfriend of girlfriend you will break up.

Lunch time beers and Nabe yaki udon with an incredible view of the lake.

We stopped off Hakone Museum to wonder around the museums gardens. The mix of the fresh air, the cool weather and the beautiful leaves was just lovely.

On the way back down to Hakone we felt heat coming up from our feet. When we glanced down we saw we were standing over a drain with hot onsen water flowing through. Along the road side the hot water trickled down the hill and we stood watching the steam rising. I enjoyed putting my hand in the water to feel its natural heat which is really quite incredible.

If you're in Tokyo during Autumn one day, I recommend a day trip to Hakone. Or better still, stay overnight in a local Ryokan and enjoy an onsen.

Pocket Tissue Case Workshop!

These are some incredible pocket tissue cases the participants made at the Hello Sandwich Pocket Tissue Case sewing workshop at Shibaura House last night!

Everyone hard at work at Shibaura House.

I find it so inspiring meeting everyone at the workshops. People who attended last nights workshop included textile students, illustrators, gallery owners, hair+make artists, furniture designers, editors, editorial art directors, stationery shop owners, product designers and many other amazing people. It's always a buzz with conversation (when participants aren't so quiet from too much concentration that is!) between these creatives in both Japanese and English.

Boys come to the Sandwich workshops too! This was Kenji-san's first time hand sewing and he did such an amazing job. How cute is the fluoro green pom pom!　お疲れ様けんじさん！

This is cute Mami with her pocket tissue case...and oh. my. goodness...

...how cute are these cookie-look-alike brooches that Mami-chan made for me!!! I will wear them everyday! What a lovely surprise to receive such a beautiful handmade gift at the end of the workshop!　ありがとうまみーちゃん！

I'll be having 4 more workshops at different locations (and also including one at Shibaura House) before Christmas so I hope you can pop on in to one! Details to follow.

Libro Aoyama Display

Do you remember the Japanese book I made with two other authors? Well, we were able to work with Libro bookshop in Aoyama to do a series of workshops and a window display for our book. If you're around, pop on it to see some of the cute boxes and envelopes you can make using the materials and templates from our book!

The Hello Sandwich workshop will be at Libro Aoyama on 29th November from 7pm. There is a small materials cost of ¥500 but that's all! And you can come along and make a book cover, a little house shaped box and time depending, some other cute wrapping things too like corsages etc. There are ten spots so be sure to reserve and collect your little ticket.

Killigraph-san (one of the other authors) will have his workshop on 6th December and he will show you how to make some of the cute cut outs he is so well known for - this time in Christmas theme. Imagine how cute your Christmas cards will look with mini cut out Santas!

Shimizu-san and Killigraph-san and I met a few days ago at our publishers office to get a head start on making up some gift wrapping examples for our display. I kept pinching myself that this is how my meetings look these days! No excel spreadsheets, no planning grids (no offence VL! I still miss you all!), but those things had been replaced with mountains of mt tape, scrap paper, shaped hole punches and, the most necessary item in my 'kit bag' - tape glue!

Our publisher brought us Christmas themed coffee from Tully's. No sooner than he had dropped them off we had cut up the Tully's carry bag to use the handles for our own gift wrapping paper bags! That's the fun thing about our book - you can use everything and anything in conjunction with our materials to create fun and unique wrapping!

Commune Gallery Shimokitazawa

This lovely little gallery and zine shop used to be 5 minutes walk from my apartment. Now it's 16 minutes since they have just re-opened at a brand new location. But that's okay because I love visiting Miyuki-chan in her beautiful new space. The sun streams in and if you ask nicely Miyuki-chan will make you some curry rice or a hot coffee and you can set up on one of the sunny tables and busy yourself scrapbooking or making other craft.

Commune is a gallery, zine shop, other nice goods shop, gallery, and you can even get yourself a nice cold beer from the cute mini Kirin fridge. You can buy cute things such as stamps, t-shirts, cards, badges, earrings and at the moment you can pick up some nice calendars hot off the press.

While I was there the other day, Kana-chan, one of Miyuki-chan's artists came in and gave me a lollypop! It's just a really nice place to be. If you are in Tokyo, I think you might enjoy popping in. It's a short six minute walk from Shimokitazawa (if you're not familiar with the area best to print off the map first as there are some back streets to tackle) or it's super close at two minutes from Shin-Daita station on the same Inokashira line.

Oh! And I'll be hosting a Nengajo making workshop there in December! I hope you can come! Details to come.

Informal Tamagawa Florist

Chris at A-small-lab spotted this adorable informal florist on the side of Tamagawa Josui walkway where flowers placed inside empty milk cartons were on sale for ¥100 using an honesty box system. How adorable! I wish I could have spotted it. I would have been tempted to buy the whole bucket!

Kanae Entani's Workshop at Nidi Gallery

I just got home from the loveliest of evenings at Nidi Gallery. Kanae Entani-san had an exhibition of her beautiful, detailed and delicate embroidery work and she was also holding a drop-in style workshop. Participants could bring an item of their choice (such as a tote bag, handkerchief or blouse) to embroider with the help of Kanae-san. I took a piece of calico fabric to embroider with the idea of turning it into a mini cushion afterwards.

Kanae-san placed my fabric in an embroidery hoop and drew me a mini-mori design with a disappearing felt tip marker.

It was then time to embroider the designs and chat with the other lovely workshop participants.

The french dots were simpler than I thought and a lot of fun!

With Yuzuko-chan's new book and Kanae-san's exhibition and workshop I think I've caught the embroidery bug! It's perfect timing too as the weather is getting cooler in Tokyo it's perfect to snuggle up with some stitching and a glass of hot wine. (I'm sitting with my Muji pom pom covered hot water bottle now さ。む。い。！）

Yuzuko-chan's new stitch book!

Yuzuko-chan's new stitch book came in the mail the other day. When mail is too big to fit into my letter box the postman brings it upstairs to my apartment. 'Hello Sandwich sama desu ka?' he said. 'Hai, Hello Sandwich desu. Gokurosama desu!' and he smiled.

We all know and love Yuzuko-chan's illustrations but look just how gorgeous they look when embroidered to furoshiki, tote bags and mini buttons!

mt expo 2011 Opening Party!

Oh My Goodness you will never guess where I went tonight! Okay, so maybe the photo above gave it away. Waou it was so much fun! As with all mt events, Kamoi went to town with the decoration and installations. The mt expo 2011 is held at Dictionary Club in Shibuya and if you're in Tokyo at the moment you can still catch it until 8th November.

Even the ground outside was covered in trademark mt event stripes!

There was such a great buzz and vibe to the night.

mt machinery was brought from the factory to Dictionary Club! Visitors were able to able to buy mt tape CUSTOM CUT (!!!) to any size they desired!!!

These mini-me rolls were soooo adorable!

The shop was stocked full of new mt designs including bows, collage, buttons and notebooks. It was so popular that Kamoi couldn't keep up with customers so customers were offered a home delivery service (pay on delivery) by placing their desired items and their address details in a shopping bag which would later be couriered to them.

Products from Kamoi's company history were on display - just incredible!

This cute Japanese guy was serving hot sangria (ahh I love Tokyo in autumn).

...and some sweet fruits drinks.

There was also the most incredible installation but I'll have to go back tomorrow to take some photos in daylight for you! (There's a sneak peek on my instagram if you're so inclined).

I'll also take some shots of some of the new designs on the tapes I bought. I think you'll like them - and may want to order some yourself!

Kazumi-chan's new book!

When I arrived home yesterday after a lovely bike ride with friends along Kandagawa to Kichijoji, I found a little present from Kazumi-chan! It was a copy of her new book! In her book Kazumi-chan shows us how to make seasonal craft for the entire year long. Cute Christmas wreaths, birthday party crowns, hanging mobiles, paper flower sticks and much more. Her new book is designed by Segawa-san who also designed our new wrapping book.

My eyes lit up when I saw a little paper cup with the name 'Ebony' written on it!!! Ureshiiii!!! And a little secret is, that in my new book I put a little 'Kazumi-chan' on one of the wrapping ideas too! I loved this little secret exchange!

It was just incredible today to walk into Libro Shibuya, Sanseido Shimokitazawa and Shimokitazawa Village Vanguard and see our new wrapping book sitting next to another book I'm on the cover of! This book was on the shelves too! It was such an honour, too, to be on the same shelves as my lovely and amazingly talented friends Udagawa-san, Killigraph-san and Yuzuko-san! You will love Yuzuko-san's new embroidery book too! It's the one on the right with the little smiley face. It's amazing!

Handmade Pocket Tissue Case Workshop!

It’s getting cooler in Tokyo and we will all soon have pocket tissues in our handbags for those winter sniffles. Wouldn’t it be cute to have your own handmade super cute pocket tissue case for your own handbag or as an adorable gift for friends?
In this workshop you will make your very one fabric pocket tissue case using hand sewing. Participants will use assorted pretty fabrics, ribbons, trims and buttons to decorate the case. There will also be stamps and inks in case participants would like to hand stamp their case! Even if you have never sewn before this case is very simple to sew!

Make A Cheese Box

Hello Sandwiches.

Would you like to make a little cheese shaped box like this? Well, below is a template and a ribbon collage for you to print out to make! It's a little sample for you from our new Gift Wrapping Materials book!

Just print out the template on one side of a piece of A4 cardboard stock, and print out the ribbon collage on the other side of your box. Then, using a bone folder (Dad! That one's for you ;) and a metal ruler, score along the folding lines. Cut out the box shape with scissors or a blade knife and ruler and seal the edges with some tape glue. And voila, you have yourself a cute mini present box!

The templates all fit to an A4 sheet of paper so it's super easy to print and if you'd like to make them bigger you can easily enlarge on a photocopier.

The CD-rom also has heaps (some aussie slang) of beautiful patterns designed by Kyou-san so you can print out your templates with patterns. And I made a collection of collages that you could print out on your templates too. One of the collages is a scatter of my craft pom poms and another is a little arrangement of flowers from my local Ozeki supermarket in Shimokitazwa. I thought it could be cute to see these printed on an envelope or mini box.

All of the patterns you see in these pictures (plus many more) are provided as image files on the CD-rom. Together we also made heaps of labels, stickers, seals and sticker strips so that you can print out on sticky back label paper and have fun decorating your packaging! There are hours of fun in this one book!

As I was making the wrapping for the photoshoots I took photographs of the steps and work in progress. These are all shown in the book so even if you can't read Japanese, it's very easy to follow the how-to-make instructions.

Do you already know the amazing Yuzuko-chan?

She makes books that teach us how to illustrate! She shows step by steps so we can attempt to be as cute as she is. She is happy when we give it a go :) (Although it's hard to make illustrations as adorable as hers)

Not only is she the cutest illustrator ever, she is such a gorgeous, bubbly, lovely person. When she made her latest book she wrapped up a copy and delivered it for me as a present with an original drawing for me!

Yuzuko-chan's latest book さんぽの時間 (roughly translated as 'Time for taking a walk') is adorable and allows us to explore many different lovely Tokyo walks through her beautiful drawings. You can pick up a copy online here.

More good news for us is that Yuzuko-chan has also shared one of her walks in each of MOC magazines issues! The latest one MOC 2 is just out now.

かわいいお店、世界でひとつの雑貨さがし is a lovely new book featuring super cute zakka and handmade shops in Tokyo (and a few in Kamakura and Yokohama). The book also presents six shops who share with us an original zakka item perfect for any gift giving occasion. The book is perfect for anyone who is interested in zakka shops in Tokyo.

AND...the book features a few profiles on handmade creators!

Do you remember when they came to my mini-me Shimokitazawa apartment for the shoot? Well, I was asked to show the readers a little craft project so I made a little decorated wax paper envelope.

These envelopes are perfect for showcasing super cute patterned stationery. I made the envelopes by chopping up some kitchen wax paper sandwich bags, using an envelope template to trace the shape, sealing with some fluoro mt tape (my tape glue didn't stick so well on the wax paper so mt tape came to the rescue) and then finally decorating with some original labels, mt tape and seals.

I hope you will have fun making some yourself. It can be addictive!

It's such fun learning about cameras. My dad is a pro photographer so I can't wait for him to teach me how to use my new camera.

Do you remember my Japanese Craft Idol Udagawa-san? And how I went to her house one afternoon for Crafternoon? Well...The lovely Udagawa-san has published our crafternoon in a new stationery magazine!

This is the little handmade folder I made at Udagawa-san's house.

And here it is alongside Udagawa-san's super cute version at our crafternoon in the magazine!

My funny odango is there too!

Udagawa-san collected all of the materials we used during our craft and saved our memories in her sketch book.

Udagawa-san has produced many projects for this magazine such as cute hand-stamping techniques, and a teeny tiny matchbox letter. If you have the chance to see this magazine in your newsagents be sure to pick it up!

I just had a Japanese magazine come to my apartment to do a profile photo shoot for an upcoming zakka / handmade mook they are publishing. The staff from the editorial team gave me this giant bag of cute fireworks as a little present along with a stack of books! The photographer was Italian - so interesting to have three languages spoken at the shoot!

Japanese Craft Book (sneak peek!)

This is just about my dream come true! At the moment I'm making a craft book with a Japanese Publishing company.
Today we had a 7 hour meeting at the Art Directors house...photographing lace and buttons, styling a pile of pencils, selecting collages, choosing colour ways, drinking coffee, eating fancy marshmallows, using the Art Directors office-sized printer (um, how cool to live in Tokyo and have your own office-sized laser printer in your home!), and having the most lovely time ever. I'd be so happy if I could just continue to make craft books in Japan forever~! Our book will be released later this year and I really hope you will like it.

Enoshima Island

On our day trip to Enoshima Beach we also walked across to Enoshima Island. It was so lovely walking through the historic streets up to the shrine, keeping cool under the giant trees and taking a rest at the lookout. They even have a giant escalator if the walk up is too much for you. The island is worth a little visit if you're at Enoshima Beach.

We took the Odakyu-sen to Enoshima Beach today. Such fun!

The beaches here are so so different to Australian beaches! I could not stop saying 'omoshiroi!' and I took a million photos!

If you come to Tokyo in summer pop on down to Enoshima beach. If you take the number 12 bus to Zushi you can find a less crowded beach ;)

Tokyo Art Book Fair 2011

This weekend I had a little booth at the Tokyo Art Book Fair and sold my zines and my new letter set! I had a booth next to my lovely friends Grace Lee and Polkaros and together we had such a fun time! We took turns taking breaks on the lawn outside of the venue (3331 Arts Chiyoda), and we were able to wonder around the fair exploring the super cute zines on display. There were so many lovely zines that it was hard to pick just a few favourites to buy!

I'll be launching my Hello Sandwich Letter Set on my online shop tomorrow if you'd like to have a peek. And unfortunately I've sold out of the Gift Wrapping Zine in Hard Copy. You can still buy the PDF version if you'd like to make some of the projects.

Hello mt tape lovers!!! Oh My Goodness this is exciting! You can now cover your walls in mt tape!

Japanese wallpaper, soft furnishing and flooring company Sincol has teamed up with Japanese washi masking tape company mt to release a beautiful range of giant wall masking tapes for interior use. The range comes in both plain colours and patterns in both 15cm and 30cm width rolls. So exciting!

Here are a few pics I took at the Sincol x mt booth at the Stationery Fair earlier this week.

Gorgeous unique uniforms worn by Shibaura House staff at the Hello Sandwich + Shibaura House workshop!

Today was such a lovely creative day! We had the Hello Sandwich x Shibaura House Handmade Notebook Workshop where participants handmade notebooks and used some Sandwich print outs to decorate their books.

And earlier, it was installation day at Nidi Gallery! So much fun! Lovely chatting in Japanese, Bisaji-san playing with a cute hand made balloon ball, beautiful natural light streaming in, my cute friend Gracie setting up an 'Australian' summer drawing installation complete with Coopers Green bottle...! So nice!

The day was dotted with iced lattes with my super cool friend Luke from art school in Sydney who arrived in Tokyo this morning. The sweetheart came everywhere with me today and helped me install and set up at the workshop...all after a sleepless overnight flight. Yasashiiiii!

Stamp Obsession!

Sandwiches! Lately I have such an obsession with rubber stamps! I can't stop buying them! (@Lee Tran Lam does this sound familiar?) When my work day is over I treat myself to making envelopes from scrap paper and decorating them with stamps. Sometimes this takes me to 4am when the sun is starting to come up and I can hear the newspaper delivery motorbike arrive. Oops!

d-bros seal sheet

I was at the Japan Immigration office in Shinagawa recently renewing my working holiday visa and Udagawa-san mentioned there was a great shop 'e-cute' inside the JR station. So I popped upstairs to 'e-cute' to find the d-bros stamp station!!! Oh My! They sell seals (that's stickers for us non Japanese type), various size envelopes, and other assorted paper products which you can have fun stamping away at the giant d-bros stamping station. They have a selection of simple designs such as dots, stripes and typography and also some cute sketch-like illustrations like the profile of the girl and puppy dog seen above. The pre-inked d-bros stamp station has both red and black stamps and they are constantly adding new stamps to the series. If you're planning a trip to Tokyo, and love stamps, then it might be worth a trip out to Shinagawa! It's a great way to pass the time if you're waiting for your Shinkansen too. Oh I wish I could go somewhere on a Shinkansen again soon...

Anyway, I made these seals! You can't really see in this pic, but it's a seal sheet which has many oval and scalloped edged shape seals which I'm so excited to use.

For my birthday we went bike riding to the Setagaya-ku Handmade markets and on the way home we stopped off at Setagaya-koen to find this super sweet mini Tanabata display~!

Supermarket

Sometimes, when I'm in my local supermarket, seeing all of the unique vegetables, and Japanese signage, I have to pinch myself to think that I live in this incredible city! I know it's not so exciting to some, but a trip to the supermarket always makes me feel so lucky to live here. Here, I can't find many of the ingredients to cook the things I used to cook nightly from my Donna Hay cookbook, but that's part of the charm. Learning how to cook Japanese dishes like hiyashichyuka, okonomiyaki, gokokumai, and hijiki is so interesting for me. It's small things like bumping into someone and hearing 'ah, sumimasen', or selecting from thousands of tofu and rice options, or perhaps seeing bread in the shape of a bear that make it interesting. I usually smile at at least one thing each time I come here :)

We did it! The first Hello Sandwich Craft Workshop at Shibaura House! wa~SUCH fun! Everyone made the cutest Tanabata decorations!

Thank you so much to everyone who came along and Ito-san, Haruka-san and Naoko-san.

Our next workshop is on 6th July. We will make handmade notebooks together. Come along!

One Year Today!

Today marks one year of living in Tokyo!

What a year!

The little J-wave Interview when I first arrived. Arigato Mariko-san.

The lovely team at BNN included me in Girls ZINE book.

My paper bento was published in VOGUE Japan. Then the sweet VOGUE JAPAN online staff asked me to start blogging for VOGUE Japan.

Then there was the super fun Hello Sandwich x mt tape workshop with the amazing Kamoi team.

It was so nice also to do the Hello Sandwich workshop at Claska for the D♥Y event.

There was the Tokyo Art Book Fair.

Crafternoons at my craft idols house!

I was able to design this Japanese website and logo and lovely Sakura-san invited me to Art Direct a book for Editions de Paris.

There are so many fun things coming up too. A group exhibition at Nidi Gallery, Shibuya, Handmade note book workshop at Nidi Gallery, the Tokyo Art Book Fair 2011, Regular Hello Sandwich Craft Workshops at Shibaura House...There will be a little Hello Sandwich page coming out in a new craft book too.

And now I am making a craft book with a Japanese publishing company! ZOMG dream. come. true!

Handmade Books

Anyone who follows my Instagram will already know that I've been handmaking some little note books lately! It. is. oh. so. much. fun. I'll also be hosting a bookmaking workshop at Nidi Gallery in Shibuya showing participants how to make these books! If you're in Tokyo next month I hope you can come along!
